Orthopaedic Operating Theatre Suite with Recovery

Sulis Hospital, Bath – Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust

  • Project delivered in response to increasing demand.
  • Part of our immediately available campaign - design and manufacturing phase completed in advance.
  • 12-month hire agreement for a building built to permanent standards
  • Procured via NHS SBS Modular Buildings Framework

ModuleCo Healthcare in collaboration with our manufacturing partner ModuleCo, successfully delivered a new Theatre and Recovery Suite for Sulis Hospital which is part of the Royal United Hospitals Bath NHS Foundation Trust. The agreement was procured through the NHS Shared Business Services Modular Buildings Framework (SBS).

The high-specification operating theatre suite will provide the Trust with additional surgical capacity following, allowing them to tackle their current backlog. Working with MCH allowed the trust to address its backlog quickly but not compromise on the quality of the facility for its surgeons and patients.

The facility Sulis Hospital opted for was part of our immediately available theatre campaign. The appeal of delivery in a shorter timeframe in addition to being able to address their backlogs in a state-of-the-art facility was the main driving force behind their decision.

The campaign was centred around producing several high-specification, standardised operating theatres in advance, as opposed to building them to order. The main purpose of the campaign was to give trusts the capability of getting the facilities procured quickly through NHS frameworks then delivery could be much quicker as the initial design and build phases were already completed offsite before them placing an order for the facility leaving just installation and commissioning once the facility was delivered to site.

The premanufacturing provided significant additional benefits alongside being rapidly deployable. MCH were able to provide the facility on an initial 12-month contract. This was a significant milestone as it’s the first time MCH has provided a facility for 12 months. The immediately available campaign gave us increased flexibility to reduce hire terms so that we could provide additional flexibility for trusts without them needing to operate in temporary decant facilities.

The installation of the facility was carried out during a weekend to minimise disruption to the live hospital site, allowing the care and service provided by the hospital to continue as normal.

Alan Wilson, Managing Director at MCH added: “Over the last 20 years our team have delivered over 200 specialist facilities to various NHS trusts throughout the UK. This project is very significant in our history, with it being the first time we have ever offered a 12-month hire contract allowing us to increase flexibility for NHS trusts by providing additional flexibility without them needing to operate in a temporary decant facility.

Sulis Hospital is a testament to how offsite construction is a time-effective way of producing high-specification facilities for NHS Trusts.”
