Ipswich Hospital - East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust

Orthopaedic Podiatric Operating Theatre

About Project

ModuleCo Healthcare (MCH) successfully installed a new state-of-the-art podiatric foot and ankle surgery theatre at Ipswich hospital, part of the East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust. Constructed offsite at our manufacturing partner, ModuleCo’s factory, the facility comprises a theatre suite, sterile pack store, scrub area, anaesthetic room and dirty utility room, providing the hospital with vital additional capacity to carry out more podiatric surgeries.

Our Client’s Challenge

A modular construction approach provided a much shorter delivery timeframe compared to traditional methods, allowing the Trust to increase podiatric surgeries while tackling the backlog caused by COVID-19. An offsite approach also minimises disruption by limiting time on site ensuring continued access for patients and healthcare professionals, a vital element for keeping the NHS running smoothly.

Our Solution

The modules were designed in close collaboration with the Trust, considering their day-to-day challenges to create a space that would respond to these challenges. These modules were then developed and quality checked and approved in ModuleCo’s factory in Cheltenham before being installed on site in July.

Alongside our manufacturing partner, ModuleCo, oversaw the project from order to handover, including the design, delivery and installation of the new podiatric surgery unit. Using our bespoke 5-year Hire Agreement, the project was made possible without the need for the Trust to find upfront capital. The agreement also includes the ongoing maintenance of the facility allowing the NHS to focus on what they do best: caring for their patients.

“This new modular podiatric theatre suite will be pivotal in helping us to tackle the growing surgery waiting list as we begin to clear the backlog caused by COVID-19. A modular solution has significantly decreased the overall delivery time and will allow our surgeons to begin benefitting from the new facility much quicker when compared with traditional alternatives. Being able to hire the facility has also allowed us to reserve capital for investment elsewhere in the hospital.

“The facility will replace the former mobile facility and we’re confident that the modular approach will provide us with the long-term resilience required to respond to the ever-changing patient demand”

“It’s been great to collaborate with MCH throughout the entire development of the project, ensuring the new modular theatre is completely bespoke to suit the unique needs of both healthcare workers and patients”

General Manager at Ipswich hospital

“We’re delighted with the work that has been completed at Ipswich to have officially handed over the completed theatre within such a small timeframe. This project really shows the positive impact that modular construction can have, especially in relation to speedy delivery times.

“With worsening capacity issues facing the NHS, it’s refreshing to see NHS Trusts embracing Modern Methods of Construction like this. Alongside our manufacturing partner, ModuleCo, we’re confident we’ve developed a bespoke facility that will be pivotal in supporting more patients at the hospital for years to come.”
